That scale coats the bottom of every tank water heater in the county and shortens life. If you're not flushing yours annually, expect 8 to 10 years instead of 12 to 15.

Standard tank replacements typically fall in a set range depending on gas vs electric, size, and code upgrades. We quote flat rate before any work.
Should I go tankless?+
Tankless is great for constant hot water and long-term efficiency, but it needs the right gas line and venting. We'll tell you honestly whether it makes sense for your home.
How long does replacement take?+
Most standard tank swaps are done same day, usually in 3 to 5 hours. Tankless conversions run longer because of gas and venting work.
Do you handle the permit?+
Yes. Every water heater install is permitted with the City of San Diego (or your local jurisdiction — La Mesa, Chula Vista, Coronado, County, etc.) so it's legal and insurable.
Why does San Diego water kill tank heaters so fast?+
Hardness. Our tap water runs 15 to 20 grains per gallon in most of the county. That mineral drops out of solution when heated and cakes on the bottom of the tank. The burner then cooks through the sediment instead of the water, and the tank fails early. Annual flushing is what actually extends life here.
Is a tankless upgrade worth it in San Diego?+
For most single-family homes with a properly sized gas line, yes. You'll pay more upfront but you get endless hot water and 20+ year lifespans. For condos in Mission Valley or Downtown, existing venting often makes tank replacement the smarter call.
Do I need an expansion tank?+
In San Diego, yes. Once you have a pressure regulator on your service (required in most of the county), the system is closed and code requires an expansion tank to absorb thermal expansion. Skipping it will pop your T&P valve.
