What we see across San Diego
The Water Authority imports around 80% of San Diego's supply from the Colorado River Aqueduct and the State Water Project. Both are mineral-heavy sources. Real-world hardness readings across the county sit between 15 and 20 grains per gallon most of the year — well into the 'hard' range and hard enough to scale a water heater in under a decade.
It's not evenly distributed by neighborhood. Coastal areas like La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and Point Loma sometimes measure slightly softer because of blend variation, but everywhere from Chula Vista up through Escondido regularly tests well above the threshold that damages appliances.
Inland communities like Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Ramona, and Alpine often pull from local wells for some or all of their supply, which can add iron and sulfur on top of hardness. In those areas we start with a full lab panel before recommending anything.

Is San Diego water really that hard?+
Yes. San Diego regularly measures 15 to 20 grains per gallon countywide — well above the threshold for hard water. Scale buildup is the reason your water heater, dishwasher, and coffee maker don't last.
Softener vs conditioner?+
Traditional softeners remove hardness minerals via ion exchange. Salt-free conditioners change how minerals behave but don't remove them. Softeners give the most noticeable results in the shower, on glassware, and on appliance lifespan.
Do I need RO if I have a softener?+
A softener protects your plumbing. RO gives you clean drinking water. Most San Diego homes benefit from both — softener at the entry, RO under the kitchen sink.
How often does it need service?+
Refill salt when the tank runs low (usually every 4 to 8 weeks). Full service inspection annually, included with Gold and Platinum plans.
I'm in Poway (or Ramona) on well water. Do I need something different?+
Usually yes. Well water in the East County and North Inland areas often has iron, sulfur, or elevated TDS on top of hardness. We start with a lab panel and design the system around what your specific well actually contains.
Where does the softener physically go?+
In most San Diego single-family homes, in the garage or in a side yard cabinet near where the main water line enters the house. We handle the drain, bypass loop, and electrical.
Are softeners legal in San Diego?+
Yes. Some California cities have restricted salt-based softeners due to wastewater discharge concerns, but the City of San Diego and the vast majority of surrounding cities still allow them. If you're in a restricted jurisdiction, we install salt-free conditioning instead.
